Finding Food

Birds eat by sifting, sucking, cracking, crushing, spearing, tearing, plucking, and probing.

  • The tools (eyedropper, tweezers, chop sticks, spoon, and clothes pin) represent the beaks of different birds.
  • The food eaten by the various birds includes: bugs (beads), worms (yarn), pond plants (straw pieces), nectar (water), and seeds (bird seed).
  • What beak was best suited for each type of food?
  • Were some beaks suited for more than one type of food? If so, what does that indicate about the bird?
  • Were some beaks specialized for only one type of food?

You will choose an animal from the Handout: Amazing Animals Data Sheet and gather information about how that animal’s adaptations assist it with finding food, moving, and protecting itself.

  1. Choose two animals
  • What would happen if the animals switched habitats? Answers may vary, but students should be discussing the adaptations that enable organisms to survive in the environment.
  • What adaptation features would be useful or useless in the new habitat? Answers may vary, but students should be discussing adaptations such as those for obtaining food, movement, and protection.
  • Do you think that the animal could survive in the unfamiliar habitat? Answers may vary.
  • How does this information help you understand how animals adapt to different environments? Answers to all questions would vary based on the animals chosen.

  • Roots: Anchor the plant and absorb water and nutrients to help the plants grow
  • Stems: Provide structure and help deliver water and nutrients to leaves
  • Leaves: Site of photosynthesis and one way that water escapes from the plant
  • Flowers: Flowers are the reproductive part of the plants. The main purpose of flowers is to make seeds.
  • Fruit: Seeds of flowering plants are always found inside of fruits.
  • Seeds: One way a parent plant creates a new plant

  • When the weather is really hot, what are some things you do in order to stay healthy? Allow students time to respond. Some answers may include: wear lighter clothes, drink plenty of water, use sunglasses to protect eyes, and wear a hat to stay cool.
  • When the weather is really cold, what are some things you do in order to stay healthy? Allow students time to respond. Some answers may include: wear a jacket, hat, and gloves/mittens to stay warm; and eat warm meals.
  • Since plants can’t put on a coat or a hat and they can’t go inside for a refreshing drink of water, what kinds of features or characteristics have you observed that help them survive?

Plants adapt for protection, reproduction, climate change, and geographical location.

  • Picture a cactus, pine tree, palm tree, and rose bush.
    Ask:
  • Where is a cactus typically found? What is the temperature and precipitation there? Cacti are usually found in desert regions where temperatures are very hot in the summer and there is minimal precipitation.
  • Where are pine trees found? Pine trees can be found in many areas, forests are example. They thrive in regions where there is ample rainfall and cooler temperatures.
  • What are some adaptations of a palm tree? Palm trees can be found in tropical regions. The very tall coconut palms have flexible trunks to withstand windy days. Their seed (the coconut) floats and can be carried on an ocean current.
  • What are some adaptations of a rose bush? Rose bushes can be found in many parts of the world, but typically grow best in moderate climates. The most significant adaptation is the thorny stem. This prevents animals from eating all the leaves. Without leaves, the rose could not produce its own food (Please note- there are some roses that do not have thorns.).

ADAPTATION

To adapt means to change. Adaptation is a change that helps a living thing survive.
