Day 3  Equivalent fractions with Pattern Blocks

Imagine that you are holding a bag with the following pattern blocks within it:

10 yellow hexagons, 10 red trapezoids, 10 blue rhombi, and 10 green triangles in a plastic zip bag.

  • If a hexagon is 1 whole, what part of the whole is a trapezoid? How do you know?  
  • Are there other blocks you can use to show the hexagon with different fractional parts?

  • In Practice A, one red trapezoid is of the yellow hexagon and 2 red trapezoids are equal or equivalent to one whole hexagon.
  • In Practice B, one red trapezoid is of the 2 yellow hexagons or the whole and 4 red trapezoids are equal or equivalent to one whole.
  • Is the fractional value of the red trapezoid from Practice A equivalent to the fractional value of the red trapezoid from Practice B? Explain. Yes or No - explain.
  • How does the red trapezoid from Practice A compare to the red trapezoid from Practice B?
