Oral Poetry Presentation

In this 35 min. competition the student will perform an oral story telling piece. The poem may be memorized or read.  It is recommended that the student stay away from popular children's authors like Shel Silverstein or Jack Prelutsky.  The more sophisticated the poet the higher the student can be scored. The student will also be judged on physical and  verbal components of the performance.  Any student composing their own poetry of quality will be rewarded with higher marks for the poetry choice category.  Prelims will be held a week before the Talent Consortium and the top 5 from each school will be chosen to attend the poetry contest during the consortium events.  The actual contest will be held in the library in front of nine other students and judges.  Each student must present three copies of the poem to the panel of judges on the day of the event.

It is suggested that each AR team take some time to practice reading their poetry aloud for 5 minutes each during the weeks before the contest.

                  Poetry Rubric:

Set up-The student is expected to give the poem title, author and a brief statement on the poem's history.- folowed by the author's purpose for writing the piece.

The student may also briefly explain what the poem means to them.

Appropriateness - quality of choice, self made or not

Fluency- How smooth was the reading or recital?

Voice - How was the clarity, intonation, and emotion expressed?

Memorization and length- Was the poem memorized? How long was it?

Props and gestures- These are allowed, but do not let them overpower the performance of the piece.
