TALENT CONSORTIUM : Ready Writing

Teachers, Power Writing is a good exercise that forces the student

to have to formulate ideas and expand on them in a limited amount of time.

The competition participant will be given 75 minutes to compose a written work.

The assignment will be a narrative piece for 4th grade and a persuasive piece for 5th.

4th Grade:   There are certain elements of writing that might be useful:

     1. Start a story with a good lead- a hook that grabs the audience.

The setting (scenery, time, and place) should be clearly defined in the opening portion of the story.

     2. Main characters should be clearly described, physically and defined by their thoughts, deeds, and emotions.

Words should be precisely chosen, showing advanced vocabulary and vivid imagery.

     3. Each paragraph should have a clear author's purpose in relating some vital story information to the reader.

     4. For each event in the story there is a corresponding number of detail sentences that elaborate on that event.

     5. Transition statements should lead from one scene to the next.

     6. There is a clear and logical flow to the event in the story as related by the author.

     7. The story should demonstrate complexity and strong control of spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

     8. Voice should be evident as the writer makes personal connections, shows passion for the topic or theme in comments or attitude.

     9. The story should have a strong conclusion that does not leave any loose plot points.

To prepare for the narrative portion of the competition a student should work on brainstorming and story flowcharts.

Also, practice describing scenery and characters.  Practice describing a moment in time, slow it down and describe the event in detail.

Good luck!

5th Grade:  There are certain elements of writing that might be useful in creating your essay:

     1. Start an essay with a good lead- a hook that grabs the audience. (famous quote, challenging statement, riddle)

The author's persuasive goal should be clearly defined in the opening portion of the story.

     2.  Words should be precisely chosen, showing advanced vocabulary and vivid imagery.

     3. Each paragraph should have a clear author's purpose for elaborating and supporting the main topic opinion.

     4. For each of the minimum three supporting detail there is a corresponding number of sentences that elaborate on that detail.

     5. Transition statements should lead from one idea to the next.

     6. There is a clear and logical flow to argument as presented by the author.

     7. The essay should demonstrate complexity and strong control of spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

     8. Voice should be evident as the writer makes personal connections, shows passion for the topic or theme in comments or attitude.

     9. The essay should have a strong conclusion that does not leave any loose plot points.

The best way to practice for a persuasive essay paper is to create a graphic organizer for multiple topic ideas and then pick one or two to flesh out.

Ask your teacher or friends for topics on which to write.

Good luck!
